چکیده

In contrast to the extensively researched modeling of plant architecture, the modeling of plant organs largely remains an open problem. In this paper, we propose a method for modeling lobed leaves. This method extends the concept of sweeps to branched skeletons. The input of the model is a 2D leaf silhouette, which can be defined interactively or derived from a scanned leaf image. The algorithm computes the skeleton (medial axis) of the leaf and approximates it using spline curves interconnected into a branching structure (sticky splines). The leaf surface is then constructed by sweeping a generating curve along these splines. The orientation of the generating curve is adjusted to properly capture the shape of the leaf blade near the extremities and branching points of the skeleton, and to avoid selfintersections of the surface. The leaf model can be interactively modified by editing the shape of the silhouette and the skeleton. It can be further manipulated in 3D using functions that control turning, bending, and twisting of each lobe.

The Oak (Quercus) Biodiversity of California and Adjacent Regions

Twenty species of oak (Quercus) are known from California. The white oak group is the most diverse, and includes a complex of scrub oak species that are often encountered in chaparral, mixed forest and desert margin habitats. The Protobalanus group (e.g., Quercus chrysolepis) is a unique and distinctive clade of western North American species that appears to be most closely related to the white...

Automatic Classification of Lobed Simple and Unlobed Simple Leaves for Plant Identification

Commonly, classic plant identification methods use dichotomous or multi-access keys that compare characteristics of the leaves, asking if they are lobed, unlobed, simple or compound, among others leaf features. However, in the literature very little attention has been paid to make an automatic distinction of leaves using such features. In this paper, we contribute to fill this gap. We propose a...

KNAT1 induces lobed leaves with ectopic meristems when overexpressed in Arabidopsis.

Plant development depends on the activity of apical meristems, which are groups of indeterminate cells whose derivatives elaborate the organs of the mature plant. Studies of knotted1 (kn1) and related gene family members have determined potential roles for homeobox genes in the function of shoot meristems. The Arabidopsis kn1-like gene, KNAT1, is expressed in the shoot apical meristem and not i...

Leaf shape evolution has a similar genetic architecture in three edaphic specialists within the Mimulus guttatus species complex.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The genetic basis of leaf shape has long interested botanists because leaf shape varies extensively across the plant kingdom and this variation is probably adaptive. However, knowledge of the genetic architecture of leaf shape variation in natural populations remains limited. This study examined the genetic architecture of leaf shape diversification among three edaphic speci...

The role of leaf lobation in elongation responses to shade in the rosette-forming forb Serratula tinctoria (Asteraceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Lobed leaves are considered selectively advantageous in conditions of high irradiance. However, most studies have involved woody species, with only a few considering the role of leaf lobation in herbaceous rosette species. In this study, it is hypothesized that, in addition to its adaptive value in high light, leaf lobation may add to the function of petioles as vertical spa...
